Yeah, I'm a copier

So this blog thingy over at digitaldisturbances got me thinking. There are some things you just can't say in the digital world; hell, there are some things you just can't say about anything anymore. But we all know there are things we think about and things we would say if only we could without having our clothes ripped and torn to shreds. So, without further ado, there is something that has been on my mind for awhile now. I really don't get it, but apparently a lot of digital scrappers do because people are still selling them-but are people really buying these things? To see what I'm talking about, go here. Yes, those are templates. Umm, come on people. Can't you just copy that on your own without actually buying it? Let's take the second template in that post as an example. She even has the pictures all numbered for you. There are fourteen. They go around the layout. There is a title and journaling in the middle. Big whoopty freakin deal. I could do that on my own without paying for it.

But, I'm all for free enterprise and all that jazz. So tell me. Why do you buy templates? Maybe you'll convert me.

I don't get templates either. I don't think I'll ever buy one. Seems ridiculous if you ask me!

Okay, I'll come out of hiding and admit it. I did buy a pack of templates when Jen Caputo started selling them. I feel like I wasted my money though.

I have some, but I got them for free and I don't see why people would pay for them.

Oh the irony of it all. I just realized that the post I linked you all up to was another Polka Dot Potato sale advertisement.

Now that I CT for a designer who occassionally makes templates, I've found that I like them. They make a good short cut. Just a few quick clicks and the papers and pictures are done. You can then spend more time embellishing, or call it good and get another layout done before the kiddo wakes up from a nap. I haven't paid money for one yet, but I have to admit that I might.

Hey Smack,

It's been my experience that people who can't, criticize. Perhaps you’ll show us some of your designs someday.

Joan, you are correct in a sense. However, I criticize because I can and I don't design because I can't. (In other words, I know my designs would suck!) By the way, I've been known to compliment a time or two as well. You should see me when I get on a roll during the "Praise Game!" But, I'll save that post for another day. Thanks for stopping by my little blog!

I buy templates because my software won't "do"some of the stuff that the templates do. So get the advantage of the designers program with my less powerful one! (or I'm too lazy or don't have enough time to "learn" to do it with my program!)

3:47 Ah, see, now there is reason to use them I suppose. I have photoshop CS3, and sometimes I forget that other programs can't do all the things that it can.

I use them because I have a lot of medical issues, especially in my hands, I would rather spend my time embellishing a layout that already has the placement worked out for me. I love templates and I have bought quite a few but most of mine are freebies from blogs.

I don't like templates and I really don't like quickpages!

I think that templates are NOT for everyone. :) The key is that there are people who scrap for different reasons. Some people love to place each photo, element, paper just so. Others simply want to get it done - so a template is a time saver. They can spend more time on the embellishing and journaling - and less time agonizing over photo placement.

In terms of copying the template, it could be done, it's really no different than a sketch. I think what you're paying for is the convenience of using the shortcut features. :)

Smack,

Man I love honesty! If you don't stop it, I might just have to lighten up! :>

Templates and quickpages aren't for everyone, but the definitely have their place in some people's lives. Some love scrapbooking, but don't have a lot of time, so quickpages and templates allow them to create scrapbooks without investing more time than they absolutely have to. Some use them because they get a brain cramp in the layout part of it, but can still use some creativity to pick their papers, embellies etc. Some like lukasmommy have medical issues that don't allow them to spend a hoard of time at their computer. Doesn't make them bad or ridiculous, but like certain colors, not everyone likes them.
